1984 Lotus Super 7

Lotus Super 7

This was number 4 to come off the Birkin of Pinetown production line. I think I am safe in saying that this was the first Kent Engined Birkin that they fitted a Richie Jute cam to as well as the twin 40DCOE Webers. Quite a performer. There was one problem and that was the noise from the exhaust. It just had a single straight through but it was so loud that I asked them to fitm a second silencer which calmed it down a little. We put the car on a Dyno at Pro Cars in Brickhill Road and we had in excess of 100 b.h.p. on the back axle.

There was a disappointment and that was the 4 into one exhaust that was made by Bosal. It just did not look the part and I eventually got an exhaust man to make up a beautiful looking stainless steel 4 into one. On taking the car from them I could not believe how quiet the exhaust note was and the other thing was lack of power. I must have lost 25 % of the power as it felt flat compared to what it had been. I took this car over to the UK for 1985 and 86 and brought it back to S.A. on my return in 1987. A Couple of years later I sold it to a fellow in Joburg, but that is another story.
