SA Mille Miglia

SA Mille MigliaAt the Franschhoek Motor Museum's Time Trial on 27 / 28 February, Johan Rupert announced a South African version of the Mille Miglia in the Cape Boland. The L'ormanins 1200' was officially launched in London recently - with a 1932 Alfa 8c Monza in attendance. The event will be in October and run over 5 days.

F1 racing legend Jody Scheckter chauffeured South Africa's High Commissioner in London, Dr Zola Skweyiya, around Mayfair last week to launch the Lormarins 1200.

The event is being organised by Chris Routledge and billed to be a South African version of the Mille Miglia.

Backing for the Lormarins 1200 is courtesy of South African businessman Johan Rupert and the purpose of the event is to indulge his passion for historic cars and the Boland region’s natural splendour.

Celebrities from the world of cars and sport gathered at the Home of Alfred Dunhill in Mayfair to witness in excess of £10m worth of historic cars promoting this new non-competitive road rally.

The cars, including a 1932 Alfa 8c Monza, a 1957 Ferrari Tour de France one of only seven made and a 1952 Jaguar -C type took members of the press and television on a series high speed runs.

Between 40 and 50 cars are due to take part in October this year at the inaugural 'Lormarins 1200’. Considering the Boland and Overberg host some of the world’s greatest driving roads, the Lormarins 1200 will spend five days winding around Stellenbosch, Paarl, Cape Town, Chapman's Peak and Du Toitskloof.

To ensure any surfeit adrenalin is dispensed with in the requisite manner there will be an exclusive 'race day' at the Killarney circuit too during the week's driving.

The event will be restricted to motor vehicles built between 1940 and 1970 with a maximum number of 50 entries. It will use the impeccable Rupert funded Franschhoek Motor Museum as its base.
