I had the car inspected at Porsche Cape Town prior to purchase as there was no maintenance history with the car.
This revealed a few issues which required immediate attention but on the whole the car was in surprisingly good condition for it age.
When I took possession of the car the airbox was blown and had to be replaced which I undertook myself.
The car is one of 256 Porsche 50th anniversary cars built in 1982, which makes her kind of rare and rarer still as she is a Targa, and there were additional extras included with the car.
The car is listed on http://www.adelgigs.com/911scregistry.shtml#82 which is a 911SC registry. Interestingly enough the next VIN number is also listed however that one is in San Diego California.
I have since I bought her performed most if not all of the maintenance and upgrade work on the car myself. An extensive list of the parts bought and cost is itemised in the excel spreadsheet titled 911 TRG WP Maintenance Log. Included are all the invoices for parts and work performed on the car since it came into my possession.
I have tried to maintain the car in as close to original specification as possible, however the polishing of the 8” & 9” original Fuchs wheels only serves to enhance the cars looks.
The reason that the engine was re-built is due to a dropped valve on number 2 cylinder head. When the valve dropped it impacted the piston which disintegrated and blew out the side of the cylinder. This happened at 150,063 miles (241,503 km’s)
I took out the engine and stripped it down to ascertain the extent of the damage. Apart from the piston and cylinder being destroyed, the exhaust valve guide boss in the #2 cylinder head was damaged. The barrel in the crankcase also suffered some scoring from the wrist pin thrashing around. Upon disassembling the cylinder heads I also found that the majority of the valves were either not sealing properly or were slightly bent.
I decided to rebuild the engine with as many new parts as was necessary and thats another story in itself.

Alfa Brera Metal Kit

Got a nice little surprise today from wife ... an Alfa Brera Metal Kit! Celebrating 50 years of Alfa Romeo Giulia at SCARB club weekend.
After three years at Zandvoort the SCARB, largest Alfa Romeo club in the Netherlands, returns to the famous TT Circuit of Assen for its club weekend that brings in Alfisti from all over Europe. This year it is 50 years ago that the Giulia was presented, the striking and innovative model that brought sporty driving within reach of the common man. The Spettacolo Sportivo celebrates the Giulia anniversary with a great line up of the different versions, a parade and an exhibition.
Each year the SCARB is challenged to display rare and special Alfa Romeos to the public. This year a group of classic police cars will drive down from Italy, where the fleet of the Polizia and Carabinieri for decades consisted of mostly Alfa Romeos. There is also a demo show of Formula Boxer and Formula 3000 racing cars.
Program
From April 1st the full program and other useful information will be published on www.spettacolosportivo.eu.
Among the program items are official races in the Alfa Romeo Challenge, driving skills improvement courses, a slalom competition and track driving for club members. The youngest Alfisti are invited to come to the Alfa Kids Club. The SCARB expects 1400 Alfa Romeos and 10000 visitors to show up over the weekend. The event is officially supported by Alfa Romeo of the Netherlands and the Direzione dell’Automobilismo Storico Alfa Romeo from the works in Italy.
Paddocks and grandstands are open to the public both days. Visitors are able to watch the preparation of the racing cars close by. There’s a special class for foreign visitors for track driving. Only SCARB members can register for driving skill courses. The same stuff could happen on any Bimmer/Merc/Audi, but the name Alfa would come up and everyone would say "Pfft, you knew better than to buy an Alfa." It's complete and utter rubbish. More often than not, the people who slate Alfa, have never owned one, or have broken theirs due to bad maintenance. Simple as that. I firmly believe people have this negative slant towards Alfa because of the old Afrikaner/South African tradition of having either a Sjeff, Fortt or if you're grand, a Mersieries-Bens. Only trust Germans or Allies. Now THAT makes a LOT of sense...

Let's take, for example, R50k. With this budget, you can get possibly the smoothest and most involving drive in its class with all the necessary (and more) equipment in the 147/156. My mother has had a 156 for a year now (it was well past 100 000km when we got it) and all I've had to do on it is change some blown light bulbs. Outsurance insures her car for R320 AND I'm covered, even at an age younger than 25. This is because an Alfa is hardly ever hi-jacked, stolen or in an accident (mainly because there are so few, and also maybe because people in Alfa Romeo are generally passionate about driving and do a good job of it :P) *NB: I did NOT cause the accident I was in with our Alfa GTV! haha

There are some things you need to look out for, though. When you buy second hand, make sure you get full service history. It is vitally important that the car's cam belt has been replaced at the correct intervals. This big service has to be done every 60 000km and is fairly pricey, so look for a car that has had it done recently before you bought it. This will save you a fair bit of money. It's just that an Alfa is less forgiving when you treat her badly. I would suggest buying from a dealer, although a good private sale with good paper work and dealer backing of FSH is not a problem at all.

The 2.0 is not a very fast car off the line, but it cruises nicely and handles like a dream (as do most Alfas). Fuel consumption is also great for a 2.0. It uses between 9-11L/100km (combined, but mostly city, according to my personal experience), depending on your driving. Spare parts are available at dealers. And generic parts at automotive spare parts stores. Also interesting to note, public relations manager of Alfa SA confirmed that sales have gone up from 10 a month to about 100 a month these past couple of years.

My opinion is that you'll get a better 156 for your money than a 147. The little one is nice and small, but is more likely to have been driven by either an overeager young man or an impatient young lady. The 156, however, has more likely been the choice of a stately businessman or gentleman of middle age who takes good care of his car.

Ask yourself this: Would you really rather drive a Citi Golf than a stylish Italian designed sedan for R50k? Because that's what a good second hand Citi goes for. And the Citi costs a fortune to insure because everyone wants one and therefore theft is high. They're great cars, but honestly, the Alfa offers so much more value for money and driving pleasure.

If you own an Alfa Romeo, you can't help but to become part of the rich history of the marque over the past 101 years. You'll also find excuses to pull your car out of the garage and go some place. Just because driving it is so nice!

MercedesBenz to hold its firstever Concours in Malaysia

It promises to be the largest ever convergence of vintage Mercs in the country - next month's Historic Mercedes-Benz Concours 2011 will see 125 three-pointed star vehicles on display at the first such M-B Concours to be held here and indeed, South-East Asia.

The event, which will be held at the Palace of Golden Horses, Mines Resort City on May 8 from 10am to 5pm, is Mercedes-Benz Malaysia's initiative to celebrate Mercedes-Benz's 125th Anniversary, which is being commemorated worldwide to mark the company's 125 years of innovation and also the registration of Carl Benz's (vehicle with gas-engine drive) with the Berlin Patent Office on January 29, 1886.
The Concours will showcase cars covering the vintage (pre-1960), Classics (1961-1975) and Modern Classics (1976-1989) period, and will be judged based on preparation, condition, correctness, cleanliness and originality.
An independent panel of judges, including a classic car expert from Mercedes-Benz's Classic Car Centre in Germany, will evaluate the entries in the following categories: Engine & Engine Compartment, Exterior, Interior & Trunk/Boot and Undercarriage/Suspension/Wheels.

The owners of the top car in each of the three categories will win an all-expense paid vacation for two to the Mercedes-Benz Museum and Classic Car Centre in Germany.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and CEO Roland S. None of the top ten trophies in this years vintage bazaar provoked such financial spikes, yet the decline from first place to tenth was much more gradual: the sum of 2009s offerings was $51.22 million, while 2010 racked up $50.54 million.

That isnt to say the year lacked any monumental spasms: a 1957 Bugatti Type 57C Atlantic changed hands, to use the clinical parlance of tycoons, for somewhere between $30 and $40 million. That, however, was a private treaty sale handled by Gooding Company, not an auction result.

Ferrari made another top showing among the perp-walk of pageant winners, with prices spanning $7.26 million for a Ferrari to €2.8 million for a... Ferrari. But Jaguar, Aston Martin, Mercedes and Talbot Lago were also on the list of what ended up being a very beautiful party...

1. 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione (#1603GT) - Price: $7.26 million (Gooding Co - Pebble Beach - August 14-15)
Considered the most significant long-wheelbase California Spider out of just 12 short- and long-wheelbase versions ever built, it fetched a world record price for an LWB California Spider at auction. Notably, this example is the only LWB California to feature an alloy body instead of steel, covered headlights, disc brakes, 262-horsepower Tipo 168 competition engine, outside tank filler and a long-range fuel tank, and velocity stacks. Restored in 1984 by Motion Products and certified by Ferrari Classiche, it was finished in its original racing livery - the same colors in which it finished 5th overall and second-in-class at the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, and 3rd overall at the 1960 Nassau TT. (Images © Pavel Litwinski / Gooding Co)

2. 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza Brianza Spider (#2311218) - Price: $6.71 million (Gooding Co - Pebble Beach, August 14-15)
In three years, from 1931 to 1933 only 188 of the Vittorio Jano-designed Alfa Romeo 8C 2300s were built, and they proved such capable racers that when two of them took first and second at the 1931 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the company added Monza to the cars name. This, an Oxblood Red third-series example built at the factory with coachwork by Italian carrozzeria Brianza, is considered one of the most significant pre-war sports racing cars: it won the 1947 Italian Sports Car Championship and competed at San Remo, Gran Prix of Bari, Circuito di Senigallia, Circuito di Modena and Circuito di Voghera. Its championship pedigree and unbroken ownership history since new, as well as a heap of spare parts that included cylinder blocks from the supercharged straight-eight, helped it garner a world record price for an Alfa Romeo at auction. (Images © Pavel Litwinski / Gooding Co)

3. 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta SEFAC Hot Rod (#2845) - Price: $6.11 million (Gooding Co - Pebble Beach, August 14-15)
Pininfarina called the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta The first of our three quantum leaps in design with Ferrari. Count Giovanni Volpi, the son of the founder of the Venice Film Festival, was one of Ferraris best customers and bought this for his Scuderia Serenissima Repubblica racing team. After a racing history that includes the Tour de France, 1000 KM de Paris, Daytona 3-hour Continental, Italian hill climbs and vintage races in Germany, it underwent a two-year restoration by Ferrari. The SEFAC Hot Rod - SEFAC being Ferraris team name - also known as the Comp/61, is the ultimate evolution of the SWB Berlinetta and just 20 of the 300-horsepower competitors were made. It would be followed by the even more coveted 250 GTO, which Enzo Ferrari would later refuse to sell to Volpi. (Images © Pavel Litwinski / Gooding Co)

4. 1937 BMW 328 MM Buegelfalte (#85032) - Price: $5.84 million* (RM Auctions - Sporting Classics of Monaco, May 1)
Do not let the silver sheen fool you, this 130-horsepower 1928 BMW 328 Mille Miglia Buegefalte could be the most colorful car in the lot. Another one-of-a-kind, this started life as a standard-bodied 328, but two years later was dismantled and then reengineered by BMWs racing arm as a wind-tunnel-tested aero streamliner for a factory run at the 1940 Mille Miglia. Wilhelm Kaiser designed the aluminum and magnesium bodywork that earned the Buegefalte moniker: the term means trouser crease, and it describes the creases on the tops of the fenders. One of three streamline roadsters, this is the only one fully built at the factory, the other two getting their bodywork completed in Italy at Touring of Milano.

After finishing sixth in the 1940 Mille Miglia, it did WWII duty in the service of Albert Speer, the Nazi minister of armaments and munitions. When the war ended it was included in the reparations package to the Russians, and the politburo heads gifted it to Artiom Ivanovich Mikoyan, head of the Mikoyan i Gurevich Design Bureau and eponymous creator of MiG miltiary planes. He then regifted it to his son, who was so exuberant behind the wheel that the father eventually traded it to Guido Adamson of Riga, Latvia in 1972 in return for - get this - a brand new Lada. It was bought from Mr. Adamson in 2001 and driven from Riga to the BMW Museum in Munich, where they built a copy of the car that is now displayed there.

Finally up for sale this year, the asterisk is because it wasnt actually exchanged under the gavel. The bidding price got as high as $5.84 million, but the car actually changed hands the follow day by private treaty sale for what we assume is an even greater amount. The T150-C chassis is perhaps the finest of Anthony Lagos creations, and this model represenents the only extant long-wheelbase Lago Speciale Teardrop Coupe. Having been based on a race car, it featured innovations like a punched handbrake, higher compression ratio engine and twin braking system, and won its class at the 1948 24 Hours of Spa. The Bankers Only, Please price tag of 165,000 francs was in no small part due to having bodywork designed by the exuberant coachwork of Joseph Figoni and Ovidio Falaschi, and its 2010 auction price of $4.62 million was in no small part due to this being the sole competition teardrop coupe to sit on the extended Lago Speciale chassis. (Images © Darin Schnabel/RM Auctions)

6. 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta (#0416AM) - Price $4.62 (RM Auctions - Sport Classics of Monterey, August 14)
Described as a Ferrari that was not for the faint of heart, this roadgoing 375 MM sports a detuned 340-horsepower, 4.5-liter all-alloy V12 that served in more aggressive guise in the 375 MM Ferrari race cars. This one was one of but seven coupes to get the 4.5-liter engine, and finished in an exterior hue called Max Meyer light gray with brown leather interior it is further specialized by having seats that adjust fore-and-aft and side-to-side, as well as lacking items like rear intakes and bumperettes. Although not too far from its racing car parent, it never competed, instead being used for more sybaritic pursuits: it left the dealership in Rome and headed straight for the movies, taking a role in La Fortuna di Essere Donna with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. (Images © Fluid Images/RM Auctions)

7. 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (#FMP 7B) - Price £2.91 million / $4.1 million (RM Auctions - Automobiles of London, October 27)
The 1937 BMW 328 Buegefalte at #4 might be the most colorful, but this one is the most famous and by far has the most fascinating accessories: the Silver Brich, 282-horsepower 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sean connery in Goldfinger and Thunderball. There were ultimately four of these built: this car, which was actually the road car in the movie; an effects car with all of the gadgets that was too cumbersome to drive; and two press cars that were built after the movies to do promotional duty. Of the two press cars, one is in the Dutch National Motor Museum and one was sold at RM Auctions Arizona sale in January 2006. Of the two movie cars, the effects car was reported stolen in 1997 and thought to have been destroyed. This one is the only known remaining of the two DB5s which appeared on-screen in Goldfinger and Thunderball, and was retrofitted with all the gadgets from the effects car when Thunderball was finished filming.

In 1969 the car was bought by Philadelphian Jerry Lee from the factory for $12,000 and its been shown in public just three times since - the final UK promo being an event at the Playboy Club in London. Offered for public sale for the first time, all of its gadgets still work, including the the revolving number plates, Browning machine guns, extending bumpers, and Martin-Baker fighter jet ejector seat triggered by the red button under the gear lever knob. The winning bidder also won a £30,000 suit from Gieves Hawkes made of Dormeiul Vanquish II fabric interwoven with solid gold thread, and a £40,000 trip for ten to the GoldenEye Hotel Resort in Jamaica on the estate where every James Bond novel was written. (Images © shooterz.com/RM Auctions)

8. 1956 Jaguar D-Type Sports Racer (#XKD528) - Price: $3.74 million (Gooding Company - Scottsdale Auctions, January 22-23)
This 1956 Jaguar D-Type ran up and down the length of California, getting podiums from Pomona to Monterey under the guidance of drivers like Pearce Woods, Bobby Unser, Ken Miles and Carlyle Blackwell. In 1956 it did 0-to-60 mph in 4.7 seconds and got to 162 mph, and this was before Blackwell added a Le Mans fin and uprated the engine to 300 horsepower. In that latter guise, with Blackwell and Miles at the wheel, it won the Pomona Six-Hour Enduro that gave the model the last big win for a D-Type in the US. After having been painted bumblebee yellow and bright red, it was also restored to its original cream-over-blue condition and was one of just three cars to beat the million-dollar mark at Goodings Scottsdale Auctions. (Images © Pavel Litwinski / Gooding Co)

9. 1927 Mercedes-Benz S Boattail Speedster (#26/180) - Price: $3.74 million (Gooding Company - Pebble Beach, August 14-15)
Along with the Bond DB5 and Ferrari 375 MM, this aluminum-bodied Boattail Speedster with Murphy-designed bodywork is another movie car: owned by Chico and Zeppo Marx, it was in the film Sylvia Scarlett with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant in 1935. At auction for the first time and still sporting its yellow and black California license plates from the fifties, it also played another role: costing Zeppo Marx $10,000. Marx had bet Hollywood agent Phil Berg that his Mercedes could beat Bergs Duesenberg J in a race across the Muroc dry lake bed east of Los Angeles. Called the Muroc Match Race, the Duesenberg left the Mercedes in clouds of dust in front of more than a thousand spectators come up from Hollywood, and Marx, we assume, later made it rain for Berg - but probably in private. (Images © Pavel Litwinski / Gooding Co)

10. 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina SWB (#3309 SA) - Price: €2.8 million / $3.7 million (RM Auctions, Sporting Classics of Monaco - May 1)
Nine years into Ferraris move to grand tourers, the 400 Superamerica (SA) marked a shift from the 342/375/410 line. It used a smaller-displacement V12 of 4.0 liters, but still got 340 horsepower and roared to sixty miles per hour in less than seven seconds, and as the top of the range sold for prices which sent chills up the spines of even Rolls-Royce owners. This example is a more exclusive short-wheelbase version from the first series of 400 SAs, with further rarity being that it is one of the six convertibles, the final distinctions being that this is the last SWB convertible 400 SA ever made and the only one with covered headlights. It was the star car at the 1962 Geneva and New York motor shows, with plenty of extra brightwork for the lights. Its first buyer, however, covered all of its shine in crust: Arizon Ferrari dealer J. A. Stallings took the 400 SA to the Bonneville Salt Flats and registered speeds in excess of 145 mph. We swapped out the tie rods with new ones, fitted new front disks and pads and new hoses.

The new brake hoses are a tad short, but there is enough play in them to let both wheels turn from lock to lock.
So the car has little to no play in the steering, which is a first for me. Im not used to having a car that where the steering pretty much works.
Only problem is that after doing all the work, and dropping the car off at a wheel alignment place, the guy said it was all set up wrong. That the car was sitting to high, and that the tie rods where too long. Fantastic.
To be honest Im tired of struggling with that bastard front end, so Im probably going to pay for someone to set the car up.

In other news, we tested the spark plug leads, and found that theyre crap. Its a great a car and truly admirable! On the parking allocations for classic cars on display this weekend, there will be 26 classic Alfa Romeos, so its definitely an event not be missed.

Heres a quick history of the Alfa Montreal from Wikipedia:

The first production car, Tipo 10564, was shown at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show and was quite different from the original, using a 2593 cc 90 degree dry-sump lubricated V8 engine with SPICA fuel injection that produced around 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp), coupled to a five-speed ZF gearbox and a limited-slip differential. This engine was derived from the 2-litre V8 used in the 33 Stradale and in the Tipo 33 sports prototype racer. The chassis and running gear of the production Montreal were taken from the Giulia GTV coupé and comprised double wishbone suspension with coil springs and dampers at the front and a live axle with limited slip differential at the rear.

Since the concept car was already unofficially known as The Montreal, Alfa Romeo kept the model name in production.

Stylistically, the most eye catching feature is the cars front end with four headlamps partly covered by unusual grilles, that retract when the lights are switched on. Another stylistic element is the NACA duct on the bonnet. The duct is actually blocked off since its purpose is not to draw air into the engine, but to optically hide the power bulge. The slats behind the doors contain the cabin vents, but apart from that only serve cosmetic purposes.

Performance and specifications:
Engine: 2,593 cc (158.2 cu in) quad-cam 90 degree V8
Top speed: 220 km/h (140 mph)
0–100 km/h (62 mph): 7.4 seconds
(measured top speed 224 km/h (139 mph), 7.1 seconds 0–100 km/h (62 mph) by Quattroruote magazine)

Standing quarter mile: 15.1 seconds
Standing km: 27.6 seconds
Power: 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) (230 bhp SAE) at 6500 rpm
Torque: 235 N-m (173 ft-lbf) (24 m-kgf) at 4750 rpm

Hout Bay Motor Show on 21 November

The Hout Bay Motor Show will happen on Sunday 21 November. Alfa Romeo competed with the strong BMW 535i and the 3.0 was leading the race pretty much immediately. This DVD was up for sale with the race and maybe we can get some edited version to display here in the future ... I will investigate.

South African models were first assembled at Automakers Rosslyn plant, located outside Pretoria. These early, 1973 models, were manufactured alongside Datsuns. From 1974 South African Alfettas were manufactured at Alfa Romeos own Brits plant. South Africa was one of two markets to have a turbocharged GTV6, with a Garrett turbocharger and a NACA intake. An estimated 750 were assembled before all production ceased in 1986.

The South African market also introduced the 3.0 L GTV-6, predating the international debut of the factorys 3.0 L engine in 1987. Approximately 200 were built in South Africa for racing homologation. To this day, the GTV-6 remains the quintessential Alfa Romeo for South Africans.

Its always great going to the meetings, members always arrive in all sorts of Alfas (we love em all) and making conversation with everyone, youre definitely going to learn something new every time. Auctioneers sold the stunning and legendary recreation of the 1939 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 SS Aerodinamica with coachwork by Touring, built on one of the original chassis in the final project carried out by Ing. Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni. This unique car was expected to fetch between US$800,000-1,300,000, sold later at US$748,000

Conceived for the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1939, the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Berlinetta Aerodinamica was the refined successor to the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Le Mans Berlinetta. The original Berlinetta Aerodinamica was last seen at the Mille Miglia in 1940 and unfortunately never surfaced in 70 years that followed. There are no known records of the exact chassis that carried the 1939 Aerodinamica Berlinetta coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring. Opinions vary as to whether one or two examples were built and, despite the painstaking research by numerous Alfa Romeo historians, the full story remains unresolved. According to Luigi Fusi in Alfa Romeo All Cars from 1910, only 33 pre-war 6C 2500 Super Sport chassis were built by Alfa Romeo and this car is based on one of these rare competition chassis.

The car was found in Eastern Europe in 1989 just following re-unification. After a several years of planning, an ambitious effort was initiated to re-create the 1939 Touring Aerodinamica Berlinetta Superleggera coachwork. The project was realized through a collaboration between Ing. Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni, the former head of Carrozzeria Touring, and master coachbuilder Dino Cognolato of Vigonza, Italy. By 2001, the main aspects of the coachwork were completed and Ing. Anderloni unequivocally declared it a 'faithful reconstruction of the Berlinetta Aerodinamica Integrale executed with original systems and methods of the Touring body works in 1939.'

Ing. Anderloni sadly passed away in 2003. This was his final major project - a lasting tribute to his father's work and heritage of Carrozzeria Touring. The car was purchased in 2003 by its current owner and the demanding restoration effort was completed in Italy in 2007. The final coachwork and exquisite details were finished by Ing. Cognolato and the mechanical aspects were completed by Nino Epifani in a manner consistent with period Super Sport specifications.

www.alfaromeo.co.za

Hello everyone, newbie here.

I currently in the middle of 4 restorations. If you're planning to let your car sit idle for a month or longer, you should take basic steps to protect it from damage from disuse.

Wash
Wash the outside of the car with soap and hot water. Apply a coat of wax to protect against the elements. Apply vinyl protectant spray to tires and other rubber or vinyl surfaces. After cleaning the outside, clean the interior using the appropriate vinyl and leather cleaners. Include the display, dashboard and console. Clear the interior and trunk of trash.

Check the Fluids
Correct fluid levels, always crucial to your car's operation, are especially important when the vehicle is in hibernation. A full gas tank reduces the chance that pollutants and water will get inside. When your engine is not used for a while, condensation occurs in empty areas of the tank. Certain additives, such as dry gas, can prepare gasoline for long-term storage. Changing your car's oil prior to storage cleans out pollutants and waste, and reduces the risk of rusting. Consider also applying the appropriate lubricant to the engine cylinders to protect against rust. Top off your antifreeze and brake fluid or, better yet, replace those fluids..

One Last Drive
Before putting your car into storage, take a drive for about 30 minutes to make sure the new fluids have a chance to work their way through their respective systems and to evaporate any water from the fuel system.

Storage
If possible, keep your car indoors for long-term storage. Purchase a cover to further protect the car from dust and other impurities. Remove the car battery and store it in a cool, dry location. Inflate your tires to a higher pressure than normal as they are likely to loose a little air over time. Remove any important documents and valuables.

Maintenance and Upkeep
Even when storing a car for long periods of time, you should try to take it on a short drive once a month. A 30-minute drive will keep the fluids flowing properly and help prevent against corrosion associated with disuse. If you cannot get on the road, idle the engine for 30 minutes (just be sure to open the garage door). If you aren't able to run the car monthly, consider buying a trickle charger to keep your battery in shape. Trickle charging your battery once a month helps ensure it will work when you put it back in the car.

Source eHow.com

Surprise surprise

Finally my new light covers arrived today! That's the highest price achieved for a 'Birdcage'. The Tipo 61 weighed only 600kg and 17 were built.

The car's 'Birdcage' nickname came from its innovative trellis construction that weighed just 36kg. The Tipo 61 was fitted with a 2.9 litre four cylinder good for around 186kW (250bhp). While earlier models used a 2.0 litre engine which produced 150kW (200bhp). With a kerb weight of just 600kg this would have gone like a rocket. And that's exactly what it did winning the Nurburgring 1000km race in 1960 and 1961.

Credit for the resulting Tipo 60/61 goes to engineer extraordinaire Giulio Alfieri who during 1958 created this stunning sports racing car. Its unique and very innovative trellis chassis construction, made of a plethora of small tubes between 10 and 15 mm thick (all 200 of them!) created a structure as rigid as it was light, weighing just 36 kgs, clothed in svelte wheel-hugging aluminium body - a true work of art and testimony to Maserati craftsmanship!

Mercedes-Benz 300SL

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat, closed sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors. Later it was offered as an open roadster. It was the fastest production car of its day.

Built by Daimler-Benz AG and internally numbered W198, the fuel-injected road version was based (somewhat loosely) on the company's highly successful competition-only sports car of 1952, the somewhat less powerful carbureted Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W194).

The road model was suggested by Max Hoffman. Being intended for customers in the booming post-war American market it was introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, unlike previous models introduced at either the Frankfurt or Geneva shows. In Mercedes-Benz fashion, the 300 referred to the engine's three litre cylinder displacement. The SL stood for Sport Leicht (Sport Light).

The 300SL was best known for both its distinctive gull wing doors and being the first-ever gasoline-powered car equipped with fuel injection directly into the combustion chamber. The gull wing version was available from March 1955 to 1957. Visit the website at www.mgcc-north.co.za We constantly receive praise for the quality and content of our Newsletter, and I never thought that it could be improved, but Peter did it.
The Newsletter is a major asset to our club and one of the prime reasons why new members are attracted to us. They are sure to find the Newsletter filled with fresh editorial submissions, news of upcomung runs, information on events, well written technical articles, a cartoon or two, a recreational crossword, some member adverts, and even more. The creation, layout and editing of the Newsletter is very time-consuming and Peter spends many hours of his personal time preparing the monthly Newsletter for our members.
Our new membership subscription is structured to accommodate those members who still want their Newsletters to be posted in printed format. With only a handful that still require posting, Peter’s schedule will ease up a bit and cutting down on postage will help save costs.
Did you know that although Peter is retired he stiall manages to run a small business, NMG Fuel Systems? In between committee duties, club runs and of course the Newsletter, he still makes the time to expertly rebuild SU Carburettors, Fuel Pumps (and much more) for members and renovators throughout the South Africa.
This month a special Thank You goes out to Peter Noeth, our Editor, for diligently serving the MGCC Northern Centre. From all our Members – Thank you Peter. You are a tribute to our Club.
Ivan de Clerk - Chairman MGCC NC

The Cape South Easter

I spent the weekend at the Cape South Easter International Historic meeting at Killarney. Its one of the biggest events on the local calender and always showcases some living legends, this year, was no different !

I was out in full support for Paul Amman in his VW Scirocco racing in the Pre-66 and Pre-77 Classics. Day 1 saw Paul running a full ten seconds off his average coming in around 1.37 with the old high altitude settings being fingered as the culprit.

Day 2 featured the Concourse De Elegance as well as the 3 lap classic parade giving spectators and enthusiasts an opportunity to showcase their cars. The GSM and Jaguar clubs had a strong showing with some rare cars on show as well.

The pit lane featured some rare and historically significant cars, the sole surving Aston Martin that raced Le Mans as well as the Red Ferrari 512 driven by Jacky Icks were crowd favorites as well the cream 500HP Biscayne that gave Super Van a hard time.

Back in the Amman camp, temperatures, tensions and tempers where all running high with the VW still not sounding right. Chaos ensued when at the last minute, the mechanic found the gremlin that was so badly affecting the cars performance. With the race cars lining up on the grid, Brian decided to call it in and retire. A rush of blood to the head is the only explanation I have for what happened next. Brain ran across to one of the garages and grabbed some spanners. He then quickly changed the timing chain - which as it turns out had skipped a tooth - and set the distributer by ear - UNHEARD OF !!! Paul sneaked his way back onto the track coming in behind the safety car.

The snap change into second out of the pits confirmed it for us. The VW was back and singing sweetly. Paul carved his way through the field finishing up 6th !!!

All in all it was an amazing fun filled weekend with thrills and spills and once again the Cape South Easter showed the fans why its an event not to be missed.

Classics at Killarney race track

I visited the track today for the first time in a very very long time ... It was great to see the cars and the unique offerings of this track. Going through the pits and standing on the wall next to track is something quite remarkable ... although ear plugs are highly recommended. I bought the car and it had E30 3 series rims on it. Those rims seem to be the standard or common alternative to most 2002 drivers. Ever since, Ive been searching for the original rims or at least a decent set of Mali BBS rims for the car. The BBS rims are hens teeth and more so the original rims. I managed to find 3 BBS rims and it seemed that they may have been Alfa rims, the PCD was out ! I was able to sell them and finally found the original rims.
